In portraiture, it's hard to know which factors are real and which extraneous.

For example, hair and hairstyle. There is no doubt hair is a part of us; the way we wear it must express something. But when a strand falls forward and catches the light?

There are graphic elements in portraiture that pertain to the picture, not the person. It seems there are graphic elements in people that pertain to the person, not the picture!
