Singing in Her Father's Arms Purchase a print of this image
This portrait is a companion piece to the one I call "Two Babes", in which the baby's mouth is very similar to her mouth here. An illuminating experience came out of that one.

Most viewers of the picture (particulaly parently and grandparently ones!) interpreted the open mouth as symbolic of need, obligation, the void, the overwhelming hardly to be borne responsibility of parenthood.

Mama, on the other hand, exclaimed with delight, "She looks like she's singing!"

And so she is, this time in her father's arms.
