Jane and Barbara (Sisters Series) Purchase a print of this image
This is part of my ongoing 'Sisters' series.

In actual biological reality, Barbara is Jane's mother.

Portraitic license: we'll use the terms loosely.

Why consult the horoscope
make tea
swallow the vitamins
Why alpha-hydroxy creams.

Why read J. Alfred Prufrock
and feel its perfection.

Why find yet another
yellow-lined pad
and scribble words
that can't match Donne's.

Why flip through
and sit there in the sun

Why sip spirits
under a yellow umbrella
and Zen-like absorb the sound
of power mowers
and barking dogs.

Why shave your legs
wash your hair,
colour your nails
wear the diaphanous black dress.

Why check the hibiscus
for buds that yield
peach flowers.

Why sniff the summer night
and watch the curtain's giddy dance.

Why watch the new moon
arch so defiantly
in the sky
and listen as the
fingers of the wind
play gentle music
and mingle scents of gardens,
smoke and gas.
