I seem to be amassing a collection of copyright infringements. Who owns the rights to the intellectual property resident in portraits of the portraitist made by his subjects?

I own the camera. I own the film. I even have possession of the negatives. I set the focus and sat down. But none of this makes a portrait. Kate was looking. Kate chose the moment. That's how a portrait is made.

The ugly spectre of litigation. Lawyers are massing like triffids; the fences are bulging inward already. Millions are at stake.
