Maybe the real purpose of becoming a portraitist was to stop time. To find a straw in the oil slick and cling to it, desperately holding my camera over my head.

I style myself a family history stalker, bravely following people as they change, desperately blinding myself to the phenomenon of the dentist aging relentlessly as I examine his face twice annually.

Between "Amy at Six Weeks" and this portrait was -- only a moment.
